Hello, fellow food and farmer’s market lovers! My name is Ally, I am a student at UC Davis and am constantly on the hunt for new and fun activities in the area. I really enjoy finding new restaurants and destinations. If you are a new student at UC Davis and are the same, you’ll be happy to hear, I think that I found the jackpot!
As you know, Davis, CA is just about 20 to 25 minutes from the capital of California, Sacramento. It is home for about 69,000 individuals, many of which are students who attend the University of California, Davis (“Davis, California Population 2019”.In my first year here, I visited the farmer’s market quite frequently. I found it to be a popular place for students and families alike. The farmer’s market sometimes hosts events and bands that come out and play on Wednesdays. There are special activities for kids to cater to families. Students can also find some good deals that don’t break their wallet too much. Some newcomers may be curious about what you can find at the farmer’s market and I am here to tell you all about it!
The farmer’s market happens on numerous days throughout the week and in different locations. On Saturdays, from 8 a.m to 1 p.m the farmer’s market is found in Central Park in downtown Davis. It is truly a prime spot downtown, just down the street from the university and near other popular spots in the town. You should plan to come in with an empty stomach. No matter what you are in the mood for, the farmer’s market will have just what you need. There are numerous stalls going down the block showcasing the freshest local food. Vendors sells all kinds of fruits, vegetables, and there is also a classic apple juice stand that you need to try at least once. Other than all the stalls that are selling produce that you could take home, the farmer’s market also has meals that can be enjoyed right on the spot!
At one end of the farmer’s market, they have plenty of stalls that are selling any and all of your food cravings. All of the aromas from the food combine into a perfect medley. One of my favorite spots is a delicious tamale place. You can take your pick of meat and order as many as your heart desires. When they call out your number, you can open up your hot tamale and put on as many salsas and sauces as you wish. If the tamale is not as much your speed, you can also grab delicious breakfast sandwich from Fat Face or even just a freshly made smoothie from another stall. One can also enjoy a nice lox bagel with some delicious cream cheese with all the right proportions. The options are limitless and this is just at one single end of the farmer’s market. When you go to the farmer’s market make sure to try to at least order food at one of the stalls. Let me know what you end up getting! Maybe, you’ll become such an expert that you’ll be the one giving suggestions!
Once you start to stray from the prepared food on one end, you start to approach more of the stalls with fresh produce and other items. One can find such a wide array of items at the market. “Open year round, rain or shine, you will find a wide range of fruits and vegetables, including certified organic produce, as well as fresh meat, fish, cheese, wine, dried fruit & nuts, jams, baked goods, flowers, plants and specialty gifts” (Davis Farmers Market). If you are on the lookout for some fresh flowers the farmer’s market is the perfect stop. On my visit, one of the stalls had a large assortment of bouquets filled with wildflowers that I have never seen in any grocery store. The color schemes were composed beautifully with complimentary purples, pinks, yellows, greens, and blues. I spent a lot of time at this time for I could not pick the best flowers. I stood there having my friend consult me on the fullest, most colorfully coordinated bouquet. I was so surprised by how many they had left because it was the end of the day, so I thought they would have slimmer pickings but even picking the bouquets before me were an impossible feat.I ended up picking one filled with pinks and purple flowers of all different types. The lady working the stall offered to wrap the flowers and handed it back to me covered perfectly in some cute cartoon newspaper. Each bouquet will not be replicated anywhere else and filled with flowers that can’t be found at any convenience store vender. You can leave the farmer’s market content with your belly full of food and your hands full with flowers!
The farmer’s market brings about joy that attracts all types of people from all over. It is filled with students, families, and everyone from the community. I encountered lots of friends that also planned to go to the farmer’s market on this beautiful day. My friend and I were even able to sit on the grass and enjoy the food that we had gotten. The sun was shining and around us was the community also enjoying the energy of the farmer’s market. There is even a Davis Farmer’s Market cookbook where it is said that “The market in Davis could be a market in any town where the public good is put to the use of the people, where the surrounding soil is fertile and worked, and where people of different faiths and purposes on the planet are willing to slow down, gather together, and shop while they swap the news” (Evans). There is a feeling at the farmer’s market that is so unique and cannot be found elsewhere. Everyone truly comes together to support one another and appreciate good food and growth.
The Davis Farmer’s Market has so much to offer. If you stop by on a Saturday, you will encounter the best food with free and affordable options. You will also be able to be apart of the community and support the local farmers and workers in this area. The energy and warmth at the farmer’s market is unparalleled. At the farmer’s market you can find food and community you can’t find anywhere else.I hope it will have you feeling warm and happy about the rest of your day.Thank you so much for listening to my podcast!
